Petroleum products' prices to remain unchanged


ISLAMABAD: The Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) notified on Sunday that on the advice of the Federal Government the maximum ex-depot sale prices, effective June 01, 2009 of the four products would remain unchanged.

These products include Motor Spirit Rs. 56.21, HOBC Rs. 70.28, Kerosene Oil Rs. 51.87 and Light Diesel Oil (LDO) Rs. 48.00.

Troops kill 34 insurgents in Afghanistan


KHOST: Afghan and US-led forces killed up to 34 Taliban fighters in an overnight ground and air attack on a militant gathering near the border with Pakistan, a government official said Thursday.The US military confirmed the operation in the eastern province of Paktika and said its initial figures were that 29 militants were killed.

Addressing the trilateral summit on regional security and Afghanistan situation in Tehran, President Asif Ali Zardari said, we have to get together to tackle the challenges. It is not just a matter of our survival, but it is necessary for the betterment and safety of our future generations. The President said Pakistan , Iran and Afghanistan , which are geologically neighbours and share common culture, history and traditions can tackle every challenge by getting together and achieve development progress. The President also proposed to have a trilateral mechanism on the dialogue on development, to realize the true potential of trade and economic cooperation among the three important countries of the region. Oil prices this week seen at year’s peak

Illegally captive person recovered in Sheikhupura



SHEIKHUPURA: The team of the Lahore High Court (LHC) has got recovered the General Councilor Javed Massih who was imprisoned forcefully and illegally and was kept chained in the Narang Mandi area here on Saturday.The poor recovered captive was immediately admitted to hospital as his health conditions were deteriorating more than satisfactory level, sources said.According to sources, before the court of justice Zafar Iqbal Chaudhry of LHC, a person kin to Javed Massih filed plea that a landlord of a village Iftikhar has illegally kept his cousin detained for a long time. Following the request, the court setup a-team under Qadeer Khan, which raided the Iftikhar’s house and recovered Javed Massih in very fragile condition.Landlord told sources that he wanted his Rs. 12,000 back from Javed Massih so he kept him privately imprisoned, sources added.Both persons will be brought before Lahore High Court (LHC) on Monday April 11, sources maintained.

At least 22 people were killed and thousands displaced overnight as typhoon Chan-Hom raked the Northern Philippines.

The typhoon blew out into the Philippines Sea after unleashing landslides, floods, and power cuts across the north of the country. Among the worst-hit areas was the mountain town of Kiangan and nearby areas that were devastated by landslides. In the cordillera mountain region northeast of Bolinao, nine villagers were crushed to death by large boulders. Power was knocked out in many areas while entire towns in the north remained flooded. President Gloria arroyo has ordered food, drinking water, medicines, and temporary housing materials to be rushed to the affected regions.

AG private practice challenge hearing adjourns till tomorrow


ISLAMABAD: Islamabad High Court (IHC) has adjourned until tomorrow the hearing of the petition challenging private practice of the Attorney General (AG), Latif Khosa.

The petition filed against Latif Khosa in IHC made a plea that the AG despite being in government job, pleading cases of government organizations in personal capacity and charging heavy fees.

The petitioner’s lawyer sought time for presenting detail arguments, when IHC Chief Justice, Qalb-e-Abbas today started hearing the petition, thereafter, further hearing was adjourned until tomorrow.
